Luis Alejandro Ortega Guerrero is a second-generation coffee producer from the municipality of San Agustín, in the southern part of the department of Huila. His father established the family finca, La Cabaña, and eventually Luis and his seven siblings inherited the farm. Of the eight Ortega Guerrero children, six still work with coffee today. La Cabaña spans a total of eleven hectares, eight of which are planted with coffee. Don Luis grows the Caturra, Castillo, Bourbon and Geisha varieties – this specific lot made up of Caturra. One and a half hectares of the property is protected natural forest, which includes a Guadua (bamboo) grove, twenty varieties of native trees, and a natural spring.
In addition to coffee, the family also cultivates pineapples, bananas, plantains, oranges, corn, beans, and yucca. The coffee plantation is located at 1,750 masl, in the vereda of La Estrella where the landscape is not too steep and therefore home to ideal conditions for harvesting coffee. During the height of the harvest, Don Luis employs 20 local pickers to carry out the cherry collection, 70% of his pickers being women. After the cherries are carefully hand selected for peak ripeness, they are transported to the wet mill where they undergo a 48-hour-hourlong fermentation, followed by a traditional washed process. The beans are then put out to dry on raised beds for a period of 15 days.
