Yemen, home to the world’s oldest cultivated coffee, began growing the crop with seed stock brought from Ethiopia. Establishing the first commercial coffee farms and laying the groundwork for a global trade in regions like Sa’adah and Ibb Governorate, farming families still tend terraced land passed down through generations where coffee remains a vital source of livelihood and cultural continuity. Since 1970, the Muslot family’s company, Pearl of Tehama, has been exporting this coffee despite Yemen’s arid climate and ongoing conflict. Led by Fatoum Muslot, the company oversees the entire process from farm to export—hand-picking, sorting, and naturally drying the beans—while also offering consultancy services to support the sustainability and global competitiveness of Yemen’s coffee industry.
